My favorite paragraph
Absolutely tickled pink by this proof of concept by Myles Maxfield, that the GSUB table is complex enough to run any possible program if you allow enough recursive substitution lookups.
Twitter can make you loose your belief in the whole internet as a means to connect people. But then you get a thank-you-note out of the blue from someone you unknowingly helped acquire a proof press years ago and turns out you have lots of connections and things in common and you love their work and feel like you found a new friend.
John Scalzi is my favorite author-whose-books-I-have-never-read. His online musings (on Twitter and his own blog) about politics and social issues are smart, funny, and wonderfully written.
This month, to celebrate twenty years of his blog, he’ll be writing each day about a different topic and its evolution over the last 20 years. If you like good writing, I recommend it.
This will be fun.

Just as a heads-up, don’t use PMs/DMs on Mastodon, and if you have to never share any private information.
Admins of sending and receiving instances can read those, as there is no end-to-end encryption. Even if you trust the admins, instance ownership could change or hackers or government could get in.
Use different tools designed specifically for this.
— Toot formatting is separate from delivery. (Toots that start w/ mentions can be seen by all.)
— Search is great. I found users immediately & across Instances.
— Each Instance can have its own web design (see mastodon.social profiles)? Almost like a different client. Could be cool or confusing.
— The lingo is dumb. “Toot” just feels like a second-rate “tweet”. “Instance” is tech jargon.
— Difficult to get started. Intro copywriting could be more clear.
— Sometimes very slow.
